The Town of Lewis, incorporated in 1805, was named for the third Governor of New York, Morgan Lewis. Located in northern central Essex County, Lewis is a small community known more for its peaceful ambiance than for its industry or tourism. It is located in the Adirondack Mountains, providing many recreational opportunities such as hiking, fishing, hunting, trapping, camping, and cross-country skiing.
Lewis is easily accessed from Exit 32 of the Adirondack Northway, or scenic Route 9 which runs through he center of town. (Click here for a map of the Lewis area.)
Summer in Lewis can be spent swimming, both locally and in nearby Lake Champlain, kayaking, canoeing, and berry picking. In the fall, our spectacular Fall Foliage is second to none. Winter in Lewis brings snowmobiling, ice skating, and ice fishing on Lake Champlain.
Community spirit and neighborliness are the major attributes of Lewis. There are many organizations to join; The Lewis Volunteer Fire Department, The Elizabethtown-Lewis Ambulance Squad, 4-H, Scouts, Senior Circle, Fish & Game Club. There is a Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and Caroling in December. Santa Claus comes to visit children in Lewis every year at the Fire House.
Meadowmount School of Music
We have 2 churches, with more available in Elizabethtown. There is a small community playground for the children in the middle of town. Businesses and services available in Lewis are listed in the Business Directory portion of this site.
Lewis has always had a good-neighbor relationship with the Town of Elizabethtown, which is 5 miles south. Children who live in Lewis attend the Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School. They are included in the Youth Commission program that is based in Elizabethtown.
If you crave a little action while visiting Lewis, there are many activities located in the surrounding towns. Lake Placid, the site of the 1932 & 1980 Olympics, is only 32 miles away and offers a multitude of Winter sports such as down hill skiing, cross country skiing, indoor ice skating, luge, bobsledding. Montreal is only 2 hours away, as is Albany.
For the culture seekers, Depot Theater in Westport offers summer-long entertainment at a converted railroad station with many local talents, as well as professional actors. There are "Concerts in the Park" during the summer, both in Elizabethtown and Westport. The world famous Meadowmount School of Music is located in Lewis. Students at the school perform at free concerts weekly in the summer. The Adirondack Museum is located in Elizabethtown.
Lewis and the surrounding area boasts many talented artisans and craftspeople. Craft fairs are held often, displaying a wide variety of hand made and locally produced products. Maple syrup from the area is some of the best in the country.
Logging and mining are the major source of employment in Lewis. A Wollastonite mine is located within the town lines. The Essex County Government Center in Elizabethtown is a large employer of local people, as is the Elizabethtown Community Hospital.
Lewis is not a "hustling, bustling, little town". It is a quiet, peaceful place to return to after a day of work, shopping, or recreation.
