NEW YORK STATE LAUNCHES ENHANCED DRIVER LICENSES

New York State will be open for applications for the ENHANCED DRIVER LICENSES on Tuesday, September 16th. The new licenses are a convenient and affordable option for New Yorkers who are U.S. citizens and wish to obtain an ID document that will meet the requirements of the Dept. of Homeland Security starting next June.

Indeed, EDL's will do more than meet the documentation requirements. Thanks to the new technology which will be embedded in the licenses, they will actually help to speed the border crossing experience. Traditional passports, which must be physically scanned at the booth, will actually be slower.

As of 9/16, Enhanced Driver License applications will be accepted at any Dept. of Motor Vehicles office in New York State. Applicants will need acceptable documents establishing their citizenship and a Social Security card. For more info on the requirements and fees, visit: www.nysdmv.com/edl.htm.

DISCOUNT PRESCRIPTION DRUG CARDS:

Towns within Essex County in cooperation with the National Association of Counties now have a discount card program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs. The county has signed a contract to make free prescription drug discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) that offers average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

The cards, which will be available starting this week (4/21/08) in your local town halls or at the Essex County Personnel Office, may be used by ALL county residents, regardless of age, income or existing health coverage. The NACo card is accepted at a national network of more than 57,000 participating retail pharmacies.

"The NACo prescription discount card will offer significant savings for the uninsured and under-insured residents of our county, and even those fortunate to have prescription coverage may use the card to save money on drugs that are not covered by their health plan," said Daniel Palmer, County Personnel Officer. "Residents do not have to be Medicare beneficiaries to be eligible for this program."

There will be no cost to county taxpayers for NACo and Essex County to make these money saving cards available to residents. Look for additional information at your local Town Halls and on the Essex County website, www.co.essex.ny.us.

"Using the NACo prescription discount card is easy," said Palmer. "A card holder will simply present it at a participating pharmacy. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance."

The discount card program is administered by Caremark Rx, Inc.
