THRALL DAM
Thrall Dam is open!
Thrall Dam is open! Two parking areas are being maintained this winter. From the east side of Route 9 south of the hamlet and from the Lewis-Wadhams Road (County Rt 10) approximately 1/2 mile from the post office, snowmobilers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers can access the 523 acre parcel named after Merton Thrall, Town of Lewis Supervisor from 1924 to 1931.
Revitalization of the Thrall Dam property was a primary goal cited by Lewis residents responding to the community survey distributed while the Town of Lewis Comprehensive Plan was being written. Existing trails and new trails have been cleared and well-marked. A new bridge to span a stream crossing is ready to be installed this spring. Also, trail head kiosks are to be built and installed. With the support of the Essex County Department of Public Health's Creating Healthy Places Program, the Town has a natural asset appreciated by generations.
Neighboring town residents and those from more distant regions will also be able to use the property. While here, they may visit local businesses for necessary supplies. It is from these seemingly small improvements that the Town can foster economic as well as physical health.
Steve Ovitt from Wilderness Property Management will be constructing another 1.25 mile trail this spring. When completed, we will dedicate this trail system to Charlie Martin and Bill Aubin who were instrumental in starting this project.
